AI for engineering and environmental consultancies

We help engineering, environmental and survey consultancies automate the work around the engineering: first drafts of standard report sections, lab and survey results into report tables, drawing and report registers, bid packs and fee tracking. Your engineers check and sign everything, so professional judgement and liability stay where they are now.

Why it matters for consultancies

You sell expertise, not typing

A consultancy’s product is its reports, designs and advice. Too much of each project goes on the work around them.

Field notes typed up into the same report sections. Lab certificates retyped into tables and then checked for transcription errors. Registers and transmittals updated by hand. Bid answers rebuilt from old submissions. Timesheets chased every week, and fee overruns spotted at invoicing.

This page is for civil and structural engineers, geotechnical and geophysical survey firms, environmental consultants and similar technical practices. Architects’ practices fit too. If you’re a contractor or a QS, our AI for construction page covers site diaries, valuations and variations instead.

Alphabyte IT, our sister company, looks after engineering firms and consultancies across South Wales.

Typical automations for consultancies

The work around the engineering

Report first drafts

Standard sections such as site description, scope of works and methodology drafted from field notes, data and your templates, for the engineer to edit, check and sign.

Lab and survey data into tables

Results from PDF certificates, monitoring spreadsheets and survey outputs put into your report tables, each value traceable to its source. Where your lab already sends AGS data files, those can usually be read in as they are.

Registers and transmittals

Drawing and report registers kept up to date, transmittals drafted when a document is approved for issue, and who received which revision recorded.

Bid and tender packs

Questions, word limits and returnables pulled into a checklist, then the closest past answers, CVs and project sheets assembled into a first draft for your bid lead.

Timesheets and fee tracking

Timesheet reminders sent, hours compared with each project’s fee budget every week, and projects heading over budget flagged to the project manager early.

Client information and site access

Requests for existing drawings, service plans, access arrangements and contact details sent and chased, with replies logged against the project.

Professional responsibility

The engineer still signs

Automation changes who does the typing. It doesn’t change who is responsible for the work.

The Engineering Council and Royal Academy of Engineering’s Statement of Ethical Principles, updated in February 2026, sits at the core of the institutions’ codes of conduct. It expects engineering professionals to act with care and diligence and to work only within their competence. It also asks them to think through the risks of new technologies such as AI.

AI can write a fluent, confident sentence that is simply wrong: an AI hallucination. So we build every automation to draft, never to decide. Figures are checked back to their source, gaps are left as gaps rather than filled with a guess, and anything uncertain goes to a person (human in the loop). Interpretation, design and recommendations stay with your engineers.

If you’re certified to ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, both standards expect documented information to be controlled: reviewed and approved, with changes and versions controlled, distribution managed and records kept. We build to your procedures, and each automated step leaves a record you can show an auditor.

Client data

Client reports handled properly

  • No consumer AI. Client reports, data and drawings never go into public chatbots.
  • Business-grade AI under contract. We build with Anthropic’s Claude through its business service. Your data isn’t used to train its models, and it’s covered by a data processing agreement.
  • In-house AI, coming soon. AI on our own hardware in Cardiff, for work where data shouldn’t leave the building.
  • Your appointments respected. Before we build anything from past reports, such as a bid library, we check what your appointments say about confidentiality and copyright.
  • Personal data kept to a minimum. CVs, timesheets and landowners’ contact details are personal data under UK GDPR, so each automation uses only what it needs.
  • Built inside your systems. Your Microsoft 365, alongside your project, document and timesheet software.
Monthly AI Support

The standard pack, applied to a consultancy

Both Monthly AI Support plans include the same standard pack of automations, set up for your practice:

  • Meeting minutes: design team, project and client meetings turned into minutes and actions in your template.
  • Inbox assistant: enquiries@ and project mailboxes sorted and routed, with replies drafted for checking.
  • Staff onboarding: onboarding videos and a new-starter journey for graduates and new joiners, covering your quality system and policies, with sign-offs recorded.
  • Knowledge assistant: staff ask “what’s our checking procedure for a factual report?” and get the answer from your own procedures.
  • Call summaries: client calls summarised onto the project and callbacks turned into tasks, or a weekly report where your phones can’t record.
  • AI safe-use policy: what can and can’t go into AI tools, agreed at the start.
Plan hours and projects

Then the work that’s yours alone

Your plan hours go on the automations specific to your practice: four hours a month on Essentials (£459 + VAT) or eight on Growth (£859 + VAT, with a quarterly review). Unused hours roll over, and the minimum term is 12 months.

Hours suit work that grows a step at a time: templates for one report type, then the next; timesheet reminders; a client information checklist.

Bigger builds, such as document control linked to your SharePoint or common data environment, or a bid library built from years of submissions, are usually a single project at a fixed quote, based on our standard rate of £145 + VAT an hour.

Questions

Questions consultancies ask us

Can AI write our engineering reports?

It can draft the standard sections from your notes, data and templates, and fill tables from lab and survey results. It can’t do the interpretation, the design or the recommendations, and it can sound certain while being wrong. An engineer reads every draft, and your normal checking and approval stay in place before anything is issued.

Will it work with our lab and survey data?

Usually. PDF certificates, spreadsheets and exported survey data can all be read. If your data already arrives in a structured form, such as AGS files from a ground investigation contractor or lab, we work from that data as it is rather than asking AI to read it again. We test on a batch of your real data before anything goes live.

Can it check our calculations or read our drawings?

No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Calculations belong in your analysis software and with your engineers. With drawings, we automate the information about them, such as the register, revisions and transmittals, not the engineering in them.

Will it fit our ISO 9001 quality system?

It should follow it. We build each automation around your procedures: who prepares, checks and approves, how documents are numbered, and how they’re issued. Each step is recorded, which helps at audit. Your procedures stay yours, and so does the decision on what changes.

Our reports contain confidential client information. Where does it go?

We tell you exactly before anything is built. We use Anthropic’s Claude through its business service, which doesn’t train on your data and is covered by a data processing agreement. In-house AI on our own hardware in Cardiff is coming soon for work where data shouldn’t leave the building.
